WHAT MAKES A COMMUNITY?
The Case for Third Places

For communities to thrive we need a mixture of uses for public spaces. Alongside the commercial centre, we need spaces within our community that make us feel good, and where we can socialise with our friends and family. A useful term for such spaces is Third Places (3Ps).

For many people Borders had some of the qualities of a 3P, and Vital Kingston is campaigning for more, even better 3Ps to start up in the three floors of the unoccupied Borders store.

In his celebrated book, 'The Great Good Place', Ray Oldenburg discusses how the cafes, pubs, town squares and other gathering places make a community stronger and bring people together.

In a 3P we are welcomed because we want to go there, rather than because of our role as a consumer.

3Ps are welcoming, they unite the community, and they attract visitors which would be very welcome for Kingston.
